Scientific Advisory Board

Helmut Zarbl, Ph.D. ATS; (Chairman):

Dr. Zarbl brings substantial research experience in mechanisms and genetic susceptibility to chemical carcinogenesis, particularly in the area of breast cancer. He began these studies as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Mariano Barbacid (NCI-FRCF), where he made significant contributions on H-ras oncogene in mammary cancer. He subsequently did a postdoc with Dr Paul Jolicoeur (CRIM) where he developed a somatic cell approach for identification of tumor suppressor genes. He continued these somatic cell genetic studies as an Assistant and Associate Professor at Massachusetts Technology Institute.

Between 1994 and 2006, he was a member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where he began his genetic and genomic analysis of the differential susceptibility of rat strains to mammary carcinogenesis. Since 2006, he has been a Professor of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (UMDNJ), where his laboratory has confirmed that the human FRY gene encodes a breast cancer suppressor gene.
